Exercises to Lose Weight Fast (Video #3): Bulgarian Squats

In today’s Exercises to Lose Weight Fast Video Series, we are going to introduce a unilateral exercise called, Bulgarian Squats. For those who feel that the regular prisoner squats is too easy, this is a great exercise to reignite muscular growth in your quads and get your body burning more calories.

So what are unilateral exercises?
Simply put, it is any exercise thats performed one on one side only where typically it is done on both. For example, one-arm shoulder press, single-legged Romanian deadlift and the exercise we are covering today, single-legged Bulgarian Squat.

“Why do we even want to perform exercises unilaterally? Doesn’t it mean the workout will take a longer time because we have to work both sides of the body separately?”

Yes, it will take a longer time if you are performing unilateral exercises, but the benefits of unilateral exercises are worth the additional minutes of exercise:

  1. It helps to improve any muscular or strength imbalances. Maybe your right leg is stronger than your left? Unilateral exercises will balance up your weaker side.
  2. Helps prevent muscular plateau. Sometimes you will get too strong for regular body weight exercises. By making only one side of your body take on the entire load of your bodyweight, your muscles are receiving new challenge again.
  3. Improves functional purpose. You will be surprised how many activities we do in real life only involve one leg or arm
  4. Burn additional calories for a better fat burning workout!
