Exercise to Reduce Tummy: Is it Really Necessary?

If I get a dollar every time someone asks me how they can reduce their tummy without exercising, I’ll have… well at least 20 dollars in the past few months. While its true that you can probably get away with losing some weight without exercising, the outcome of your weight loss may be far from ideal compared to someone who does. Here are some very good reasons why you should include exercising as part of your plan to reduce tummy:

1. Better appearance:
People who lose weight simply by dieting or starving themselves often end up looking weak and restless because their self-inflicted food deprivation. As they are only reducing calories to lose weight, the shape of their bodies will look like a saggy semi-deflated balloons.

People who exercise to reduce tummy or lose weight on the other hand, feel a lot more energetic and have a vibrant and healthy glow. Since muscles are what give the human body those oh-so-desirable shapes and curves, people who exercise fit in their clothes better as they replace ugly fat with firm and toned muscles.

2. More sustainable weight loss:
If you are looking to reduce your tummy and keep that tummy off for good, exercising should be an inseparable part of your plan. Consider building muscles as creating an automatic fat burning machine in your body. Every pound of muscle you have, your body burns up to an additional 50 calories a day. So imagine if you build 10 pounds of muscle, that’s already an additional 500 calories you burn off a day just for having those additional muscles!

3. Post exercise calorie burn:
Every time you exercise, especially with resistance exercises, you are creating micro-tears in your muscle fibers. Now don’t panic, this is not a bad thing. Immediately after your workout, your body goes into repair mode. During this time, extra calories are used to help your body recover from your workout and repair the micro-tears caused by your exercise so you will become stronger in your next workout. Surely you don’t get all these extra caloric burn with just dieting and starving yourself.

4. General health benefits:
It has been said before but it bears repeating that exercising in general not only helps reduce your tummy, but it also has overall health benefits. People who work in a sedentary office environment like us have an even greater need to exercise! Regular exercise has shown to prevent high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart diseases, stroke and the list goes on and on.

Its true that people are innately lazy. For corporate professionals like us, time is never a luxury we have. If you have never exercised before or have been inactive for some time, it may require a very drastic reason to get you out of that couch and onto the gym. But don’t wait for that one big life threatening reason to come before you decide to exercise. Start slow with just brisk walks around your block and gradually build to a proper workout routine.
